Which Tuition Centre To Choose?

Let's explore the common claims and whether they are worth it.

The problem – what are we looking for?

The tyranny of choice is the paralysis it causes when choices overwhelm the individual it seeks to free. Let’s break it down. Take the tuition industry for example. Singapore alone has over 1,000 tuition centres, many of which claim to provide a ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution, a “guaranteed-A” plan that has a thousand caveats or the “most affordable” classes. The end result? Students are left bouncing from trial to trial, parents are pressured to do research for the best tuition options and centres are left fighting tooth and nail. Established centres seek to maintain their relevance while new centres seek to establish a foothold in the market.

In a sea of teachers each passionate about their students’ improvement, what sets each centre apart? It’s the feeling students and their parents get. Parents want a teacher they can entrust their children’s education with. Students want to find a joy in learning that relieves the stress from their studies.

Claim 1: The Guaranteed ‘A’

These centres tell prospective customers that they can guarantee an ‘A’ for their students or they get their money back. Oftentimes, this claim seems too good to be true and indeed it usually is.

Problem 1: Such centres often only accept students who have already achieved a certain English result. When targeting students who already score well, such exclusivity is premised on the idea that students scoring well have a solid foundation. They assume that there are little to no cracks in the foundation and focus on building up the peripherals that push a ‘B’ student to an ‘A’.  However, overlooking basic misconceptions students may inadvertently harbour may not serve the students long-term.

Problem 2: When students’ grades drop, this can then subconsciously affect a student’s confidence and their ‘worthiness’ of deserving tuition. Feeling underserving of the very tool that is meant to help them in the very first place then becomes a self-defeating narrative.

Problem 3: The money-back guarantee is often fallacious when it comes with a litany of requirements. Multiple repetitions, seemingly endless self-study materials and a heavy homework workload. Any failure to complete the infinite tasks renders the money-back guarantee void.

What to check: Have a comprehensive understanding of your child’s weaknesses and strengths and how the centre can cater to both of them.

Claim 2: The High Distinction Rate

Tuition centres that boast a high distinction rate certainly look impressive. They help parents envision their own children scoring ‘A’s based on probabilities. However, such statistics may also seem untrustworthy.

Problem 1: they may only accept students who already score well. An ‘A’ is therefore hardly out of reach. While some centres may provide a comprehensive improvement plan and syllabus, others may simply assume all these students need is a nudge. If all that is provided is a nudge, do these tuition centres actually provide the elite help presumed when collecting premium fees?

Problem 2: The issue with publishing such rates is the verification. While most businesses do not start out to deceive people, the scepticism of their results is simply human nature. Yet, the proof of such results is often missing or cloaked with secrecy. Honestly, Wonder Writers has also bragged about our own 91% A/2-grade improvement rate. We know it sounds sketchy. That’s why we now publish pictures of the results!

What to check: whether they only admit students of certain grades, how they help students both through their pedagogy and other avenues available.

Claim 3: The One-Stop Shop

Many tuition centres offer more than one subject. It’s simpler that way. Parents can simply park their children with a single centre and not deal with many different actors.

Problem: You get a jack of all trades, master of none. The specialist in Mathematics, in Chinese or in Robotics is not hiding out in a centre that does not focus on its talent.  Sure, it’s possible for centres to truly offer fantastic help in certain subjects among others offered. However, the onus should still remain on the parent to ensure that every single subject they enrol their students for is taught by a tutor who knows the subject well and knows the path to success. It’s not just a wall of “A” grades with only 5 in English, 5 in Chemistry and 2 in Physics. Having 5 students scoring ‘A’ in English is hardly an accomplishment for 5 classes of 10 students.

What to check: background of tutors and history of improvement for each subject that you are keen on.

Claim 4: Engaging lessons

Among the claims listed in this article, this is honestly one of those most worth signing up for. That being said, there are different types of engagement and not all serve the student well. At Wonder Writers, while we prioritise maintaining student engagement, we actively ensure that said engagement translates to efficient absorption of the content taught, while keeping class sizes small to ensure that each student gets the attention needed to address their individual concerns.

Problem: To leverage on economies of scale, tuition centres often try to pack as many students in their classes as possible. Parents should check the class sizes. A class of 25 to 30 may have an entertaining teacher. However, the student is only productively engaged when the teacher is able to address their individual needs, rather than providing mass entertainment.

What to check: class sizes and teacher’s attention to each student both in class and outside of classes, as well as effectiveness in delivering content that actually helps students improve.

Claim 5: Pedigree tutor

Whether an MOE Teacher, ex-journalists or an ex-lawyer (like myself), we have proven we can score well. Yet, this does not guarantee the quality of lessons provided.

Problem: A person can study well but not teach well. What students need is not a model student to follow. What they need is someone in their corner, checking their blind spots and strategizing with them. Parents must check that the tutors have a proven ability to teach students well – check if there is a proven track record of grade improvements and reviews backing up the tutors’ teaching abilities.

What to check: check if the tutor has actually produced results and how they conduct classes.
